Industrial Design & Innovation
Innovation is a much used but often misunderstood term within many organisations. Key to the success of an innovation programme is a common and collectively agreed definition.
Having some form of agreed definition from the outset helps to align your teams thinking and focuses everyone towards achieving the same goal.
Smallfrys definition of innovation is a simple yet long considered solution….
“The strategic implementation of good ideas for commercial gain”.
The most common mistake within innovation is that it is often confused with invention i.e. the invention of something totally revolutionary, ground-breaking and ‘new to the world’. This is not necessarily the case with innovation.
When faced with the challenge of delivering new products or services it is often hard to know where to start. An obvious place is by looking at what it is you are currently offering and asking the question of “how can it be improved?”
Secondly, technology is a good source of opportunity for innovation. The difficulty with some technologies however is that it is not always immediately apparent if there will be a real benefit to the customer.
The final element is the key to understanding your market and your customers. In understanding what it is that your customers really want you can focus effort into delivering a solution where you have already established there is a real demand.
If you give people what they want they buy it! By taking the time to really understand what people want you significantly increase the chances of delivering the right solution.
